A charged washing agent is regenerated in a column by stopping with vapour produced by heat in the column sump. Condensate of vapour at the column head then permits removal of the stripped component, while the condensate is returned to the lower zone of the column. The sump heat for vapour prod. derives from indirect heat exchange in an external exchanger between part of the sump prod. and a heating medium. Before return to the column box, at least part of the condensate may be directed into a separator washing unit and then returned for remixing with the main condensate flow.
