Halogenated hydrocarbons are removed from fluid by contact with substance comprising ring cpd. obtd. by reaction of aldehyde with aromatic hydroxy cpd. and/or reaction of aldehyde with urea cpd.. The ring cpd. is esp. reaction prod. from an aldehyde, esp. HCHO, and aromatic hydroxy cpd., or of an aliphatic and/or aromatic aldehyde with chromotropic acid, veratole, benzodioxole, (substd.) phenol, (substd.) naphthol, pyrocatechol, resorcinol and/or pyrogallol. USE/ADVANTAGE - The process is esp. for removal of halo-hydrocarbons from textile waste water. Removal of halo-hydrocarbons, esp. halogenated aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, is specific and simple, and non-selective removal of other non-polar substances is avoided. The dia. of the ring cpd. can be adapted to the partic. halo-hydrocarbons to be removed. The ring cpd., with enclosed halo-hydrocarbon, forms a low-vol. waste for disposal
