PURPOSE: To translate an original text in a first language to an objective text in a second language by using a statistical technique to obtain most likely translations. CONSTITUTION: An original French text part F is converted to an intermediate structure expression by a French conversion component 201, and set of intermediate objective structure hypotheses is generated from an intermediate original structure F'. In a statistical conversion component 202, an English language model 204 assigns probabilities or examination marks to intermediate objective structures. An English-French translation model 205 assigns a probability or examination marks to an event of translation from an intermediate objective structure E' to the intermediate original structure F'. A decoder 206 combines these examination marks, and the intermediate objective structure E' having the highest number of combined examination marks is calculated. An English conversion component 203 converts this objective structure hypothesis having the highest number of examination marks to an English text part E in the objective language. This system can be not only operated in the batch mode but also constituted as a user support machine.
