RECORDING METHOD AND REPRODUCTION METHOD FOR PICTURE DATA

PURPOSE:To reproduce picture data with gradation and resolution not provided to original picture data without need of complicated arithmetic operation. CONSTITUTION:Digital picture data 100 being an original picture are compressed into difference data L0, L1, L2 among plural resolutions and gradations and control data INFO corresponding to a picture size of the original picture are recorded on a Compact Disk 130 in relation to the difference data L1, L2, L3. When the control data INFO does not indicate a highest gradation 16Base, '0' is generated as the difference data and recorded. When picture data are reproduced, the data are interpolated based on the difference data L1, L2, L3 as to any of the plural resolutions and gradations to decode the original picture data 100. In this case, when the control data INFO does not indicate a highest gradation 16Base, the difference data L0 being '0' data are not used and simple interpolation is implemented.
