A supporting ring (28) bears against the socket wall, and behind it in the insertion direction is an elastic sealing ring (26). A holder engaging behind the flange holds it in the engaged position. On the side towards the sealing ring the supporting one has a sealing lip (42) enclosing the pipe end (14'). At this side the sealing ring end face widens conically from the lip to the outer edge, while the lip itself ends in the radial plane containing the outer edge. The supporting ring can be of metal, with the lip vulcanised to it. Alternatively, the two can be formed by a one-piece elastic moulding, the ring being harder than the ring. ADVANTAGE - Long seal life, even under extreme conditions.
