<p>PURPOSE:To provide the device which is applicable to both of nonstereoscopic and stereoscopic displays, is not adversely affected in image formation by geomagnetism, has a high resolution and is miniaturized. CONSTITUTION:The polarization component of the S wave reflected by the slope 70a of a beam splitter prism 70 which is one of optical members among the light beams emitted from a light source 1 is returned through a first liquid crystal display element 12 to the beam splitter prism 70. The light transmitted through the picture element which is not subjected to light modulation by the element 12 returns to the light source 1 side but the light of the picture element subjected to the light modulation generates the polarized component of the P wave which is reflected by the slope 70a of the prism 70 and is emitted to a display surface 6 side. Namely, the images of the first and second liquid crystal display elements 12, 12' are polarized toward the display surface 6 and are emitted as the images, the directions of the polarization of which are varied by, for example, 90 deg.. The object, etc., are stereoscopically observed by previously displaying the images for the right and left eyes on the respective elements 12, 12' and viewing these images by spectacles constituted of polarizing plates.</p> |
