The supporting device has a casing (2) having three arms which each carry a roller (1) for engaging a chamfered edge of the long workpiece. Spaces between the arms provide access for machining. The rollers (1) are set at an angle (5) to engage the chamfer. The angle and the radial position of the rollers may be adjustable. ADVANTAGE - End of long workpiece supported to centralise it on the axis of rotation whilst allowing access for machining.
