A bearing assembly is described in which a bearing chamber is sealed by means of a mechanical seal. The mechanical seal consists of a first seal ring non-rotatably secured to a first tubular member and a second seal ring nonrotatably secured to a second tubular member. The first tubular member and second tubular member are telescopically conjoined. The conjoined tubular members have a drill bit end and a motor end. Biasing springs are provided urging the first seal ring and the second seal ring together in face to face engagement to form a mechanical seal. A lubricant reservoir is positioned at a drill bit end of the telescopically conjoined tubular members. The lubricant reservoir has a drill bit end and a motor end. A passage is positioned adjacent the motor end which communicates with the bearing chamber.
