PURPOSE:To obtain a new compound useful for preventing and treating diabetic complication, having inhibitory action on aldose reductase. CONSTITUTION:The compound of formula I [R<1> is H, lower alkyl, (substituted) aryl (lower) alkyl, (substituted)aryl, etc.; R<2> and R<3> are H, halogen, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, acyl, nitro, amino, etc.] such as 7-acetyl-2-(4-bromo-2- fluorobenzyl)-[1,2,3,4-tetrahydropyrrolo[1,2-a]-4-spiro-3'-pyrrolidine l1,2',3,5'-tetrone. The compound of formula I, for example, is obtained by subjecting a compound of formula II (R<9> is protecting carboxyl) to ring closure in a solvent such as benzene in the presence of a base such as sodium carbonate. |
