A process for the total state observation of an installation having two working machines interconnected by a torsion element allows improved measurement value processing by means of coordinate transformation and by using self-equilibrating integrator loops. Speed and torque coordinates are measured at two points, i.e. before and after the mechanical torsion element. Internal state parameters, such as friction torque, acceleration torque, spring clamping torque, differential angular speed, differential angular acceleration and the mean angular acceleration with the mean angular acceleration of the whole mechanical system are derived therefrom, without distinction between measured values and calculated values.
