The takeup reel-side soft brake for VCR includes a soft brake gear for providing a braking force during reverse conveyance of a tape and releasing the braking force during forward conveyance of the tape, and a rotation constraining means for controlling the rotation of the soft brake gear, thereby minimizing power consumption.
