PRODUCTION OF WATER ABSORBING CELLULOSIC FIBER

PURPOSE:To provide a method for treating the interior of a cellulosic fiber so as to have water absorbing property without impairing handle of the cellulosic fiber. CONSTITUTION:An alkali cellulose is immersed in an acid bath to neutralize only surface of the fiber and then immersed in an aqueous solution of monochloroacetic acid or its salt and heat-cured to subject an alkali cellulose part of the interior of the fiber to carboxymethylation. Thereby, the objective cellulosic fiber having 0.01-0.5 substitution degree of carboxymethyl group and 45-100% water absorption is obtained.
