PURPOSE:To improve the angle of field of the liquid crystal display device. CONSTITUTION:A polarizer 11 and an analyzer 12 are arranged on the outer side of a liquid crystal cell 10 in the state that the axes P1, P2 of transmission clamping cell 10 and intersect nearly orthogonally with each other on both sides of the cell. One sheet of phase plate 13 is arranged between the liquid crystal 10 and the analyzer 12 in such a manner that the delay axis R1 thereof intersects nearly orthogonally with a first orientation treatment direction A0; in addition, the value of nd of the liquid crystal layer is set nearly at 380nm and the value of nd of the phase plate is set at 350nm. The phase difference of the light generated by the diagonal transmission of the light through the liquid crystal cell 10 is, therefore, compensated by the phase plate 13, by which the angle of field of the liquid crystal display device is widened and the inversion region is narrowed. |
