PURPOSE:To improve water absorbing, moisture absorbing, humectant and thickening properties by containing a culture prepared by culturing a microorganism belonging to the genus Alcaligenes or a treated substance thereof as a principal ingredient. CONSTITUTION:Alcaligenes latus B-16 strain is cultured in a culture medium containing a carbon source set at monosaccharides or disaccharides at 15 to 40 deg.C and pH4 to 10 for 1 to 10 days with aeration to provide a culture, which is then separated and purified to produce polysaccharides having the following properties. Principal ingredients composed of rhamnose, fucose, glucose, mannose, glucuronic acid at (1 to 10):(2 to 10):(4 to 20):1:(1 to 5) molar ratios Elementary analysis ratio (wt.%); C, 40+ or -4; H, 6+ or -1, O, 54+ or -5. Carbonization point 225 to 280 deg.C. Solubility; sparingly soluble in water (neutral), soluble in alkali and insoluble in acetone, etc. Ultraviolet absorption spectrum; no characteristic absorption of proteins an nucleic acid Infrared absorption spectrum; peaks at 800 to 1200cm<-1>, etc. The resultant polysaccharides are then contained to produce a water absorbing moisture absorbing, humectant and thickening agent. |
