When the halves are screwed together, the cross-sectional area enclosed by the groove (22-24) in one half (1) and the threaded portion of the other is constant. It is less than that of the ring in the undistorted state, taking into account the axial and tangential displacement of the ring material into the gaps formed between the threads. The groove width is greater than the thread pitch, but less than 1.5 times the latter. The groove is situated in the threaded portion in a position where the two threads are fully engaged. USE/ADVANTAGE - Gas-tight pipe union gives full sealing if metal seating is damaged, and no peak loads causing distortion of either half.
