The generator has a claw-pole rotor 11 comprising pole plates 34, 38 with integral claws 33, 35, and cooling fans 40 fixed to the pole plate 34, 38 via spacing ribs 36, which ribs 36 give rise to substantially radial air flows aiding the cooling effect produced by the fan blades 42. Each fan 40 may be produced by stamping or pressing a flat band (46, Fig. 5) to form raised sections (48) and lower sections (50) welded to ribs 36 on plate 34 or 38, with the fan blades 42 being formed by surfaces (52) interconnecting section (48), (50). Alternately, the ribs 36 may be formed integrally with the fans 40 by corrugation (45, Fig. 7) in the fan base plates (44).
