PURPOSE:To produce an optical fiber preform with deposition efficiency improved at the time of depositing a glass soot by external chemical vapor deposition. CONSTITUTION:In the external chemical vapor deposition, the increase in the effective contact area between a deposition soot 6a and a burner flame 5 is monitored by a radiation thermometer T, and the exhaust volume of a chamber 2 is increased based on the information on the increase to produce an optical fiber preform. Since the exhaust volume is thus controlled, the glass soot 6 is not excessively discharged from an exhaust pipe 4, the soot 6 is not rebounded or leaked outside the chamber due to the insufficient exhaustion, and the soot is deposited rapidly and efficiently. |
