PURPOSE:To prevent that the emitting orifice forming surface of a recording head is damaged by a cap member at a time of the replacement of the recording head by bringing the recording head and the cap member into contact with each other when the recording head is mounted on a carriage by detecting the presence of the recording head and separating both of them when the recording head is not mounted. CONSTITUTION:A recording head 1 emitting ink to a recording medium to perform recording is mounted on a carriage 2 to scan the recording medium. The cap 22 capable of coming into contact with the recording head 1 or capable of separating from the recording head 1 is provided so as to be capable of covering the surface having ink emitting orifices of the recording head 1. A detection means 21 detecting the mounting or non-mounting state of the recording head 1 to the carriage 2 and a contact/separation means 29 bringing the recording head 1 and the cap 22 to a contact or separated state corresponding to the mounting or non-mounting state of the recording head 1 to the carriage 2 detected by the detection means 21 are provided to the ink jet recording apparatus having the above mentioned constitution. |
