According to the method for studying the activity of microbial-growth-inhibiting agents, such as antibiotics, a change is studied on the growth medium caused by an agent added onto the microbial growth medium. A picture is taken of the growth medium and the grey tone values of its pixels (picture elements) is registered, the distribution (spectrum) of grey tones is formed, from which the threshold value of the grey tone value is determined, which shows the border between the area of change caused by the growth inhibiting agent and the normal microbial growth by finding a suitable minimum which lies between the distribution peaks caused by the area of change and the culture. Based on the location of the pixels which fulfil the threshold value a characteristic is determined for the area of change, such as the diameter of the inhibition zone caused by the antibiotic. <IMAGE>
