A herbicide containing an active ingredient comprising a compound, represented by general formula (I), derived from a substance produced by a microorganism, wherein X1 and X2 may be the same or different from each other and each represents hydrogen, methyl or hydroxymethyl; R represents methyl, hydroxymethyl or -CH=C(CH3)CH2R' ; and R<1> represents carboxy, hydroxymethyl or acetoxymethyl. It has a potent herbicidal effect against a wide variety of plants including broad-leaved and gramineous weeds.
