PURPOSE: To obtain an activated carbon substrate having sufficient mechanical strengths and heat resistance, not causing chipping and flaking and also having high adsorbing ability. CONSTITUTION: A composite consists of an inorganic substrate having pores that extend from an outer surface to the interior and a substantially continuous carbon layer formed by coating on the outer surface of the substrate. The carbon coating penetrates into the pores of the substrate. The composite is produced by bringing an inorganic substrate into contact with a coating/ impregnating material at least most of which comprises a carbon precursor liquid, treating the substrate under conditions effective to cure the carbon precursor liquid and heating the substrate under conditions effective to convert the cured carbon precursor liquid to carbon.
