This set comprises stems intended to be cemented, stems intended to be mechanically anchored in the bone by suitable means and replacement stems which are longer than the stems of the two aforementioned types. According to the invention, each stem (2, 3, 4) has a metaphyseal part (2a, 3a, 4a) which widens in both the sagittal and anteroposterior plane and has an oblong cross-section, which is connected at the proximal end to a widened neck (2b, 3b, 4b) terminating in a frustoconical end (2c, 3c, 4c) for receiving a spherical head, and which is extended at the distal end by a medullary tail (2d, 3d, 4d), at least one part of which has a conical shape with a slight slope, complementary means (2e, 3e, 3f, 3g, 4e) for anchoring the stem (2, 3, 4) in the bone being provided on the metaphyseal part (2a, 3a, 4a) as well as, optionally, on at least one proximal portion of the said medullary tail (2d, 3d, 4d). <IMAGE>
