PURPOSE:To improve the luminance of a projected picture by condensing the transmitted light and the reflected light of polarizing beam splitters at the identical position of a liquid crystal panel without vignetting them. CONSTITUTION:By the polarizing beam splitters 511 and 512, the light radiated from a light source 11 is split into P polarized light transmitted as it is and S polarized light reflected in the vertical direction to the P polarized light. The S polarized light is reflected on reflecting mirrors 521 and 522 and converted into the P polarized light by 1/2 wavelength plates 531 and 532. Since the mirrors 521 and 522 are arranged to be separated from the splitters 511 and 512, the reflected light thereof can be condensed on the liquid crystal panel without being vignetted. |
