A system (10) for mixing bone cement is disclosed. Dry PMMA powder and MMA liquid are mixed in a vacuum chamber (30) by a rotary mixer (40) having a pair of spaced mixing arms (74, 76). The rotary mixer (40) is manually rotated by a gear drive (36). The arms (74, 76) of the rotary mixer (40) follow continuous paths (80, 82), each path (80, 82) having a plurality of loops (84) at the wall (24) of the chamber (30) and curved portions (86) extending across the container between loops (84). The arms (74, 76) move through the cement, break bubbles and thoroughly mix the PMMA and MMA. Gas from broken bubbles is vacuum drawn from the mixer by a vacuum source (110) through a vacuum tube (106) which extends between the mixer and a vacuum source (110). The vacuum source (110) is automatically deactivated when the vacuum tube (106) is detached from the mixer.
