A heat exchanger with tubes (14) arranged in more than three rows (17-20), preferably in a triangular or Y-shaped pattern. A first fluid (12) flows across the tube bundle, from the widest row (17) of tubes to the apex (34) of the triangle or Y. The flow of the first fluid is confined by a passage (26) which defines a progressively narrower flow area for the first fluid. A second, cooler fluid (13) flows through the tubes in a plural pass arrangement in counterflow to the first fluid, beginning with the tubes adjacent the apex (34) and then through the tubes in the middle rows (19 and/or 18), then finally through the tubes in the widest row (17). The number of tubes in each pass of the second fluid (and thus the total flow area for each pass) may vary. |
