The invention relates to a novel, fusible polyester urethane and to a process and a prepolymer for preparing it. The polyester urethane contains structural polyester units consisting of aliphatic and aromatic hydroxyacid units and also structural units which are derived from diisocyanate, with the bonds between the structural units at least in the main only consisting of urethane bonds and with the number average molar mass, Mn, of the polymer being at least 10,000 g/mol, its weight average molar mass, Mw, being greater than 20,000 g/mol, and the molar mass distribution, expressed by the ratio Mw/Mn, being greater than 2, and the polymer being essentially free of free isocyanate groups. The polyester urethane is hydrolytically decomposable and can be used as a biodegradable polymer, inter alia for producing injection moulded pieces and heat-moulded and blow-moulded packing, bags, sacks and bottles, and for coating sacks, bags and foil which are manufactured from paper and cardboard, and for producing fibres and non-woven fabric.
