Two vibrating piezoelectric bars (3,4) each have mirrors (1,2) mounted at one end, giving a scanning movement. A monitor (15) is mounted between them. Feed voltage to the unit is provided by cables (17,18). A fibre optic cable (19) collects information from detectors (10,11) at the surface being investigated. The surface is illuminated by a laser (13). Returning information is collimated (5,6) and passed to the remote monitor, via the sweeping mirror.
