PURPOSE:To provide a reflection type liquid crystal display element which is capable of brightening background and improving contrast in a state of low degree of coloring of the background. CONSTITUTION:Nematic liquid crystal layer 8 which twistingly oriented above 180 deg. is inserted and held between an upper glass substrate 4 provided with an ITO electrode 5 and an oriented film 7 and a lower glass substrate 11 provided with an ITO electrode 10 and an oriented film 9 to form a liquid crystal cell. Outside the upper glass substrate 4, an upper polarization plane 1 is arranged via phase plates 2, 3 and outside the lower glass substrate 11, an lower polarization plane 12 is arranged, and further, a reflection plate 13 is arranged outside the plate 12. A white coating film 6 is provided outside display regions between the ITO electrode 5 and the ITO electrode 10 formed to a matrix shape on the upper glass substrate 4 and lower glass substrate 11. |
