Prepn. of a diamine (I) involves reacting an aminoalcohol (II) with ammonia or a prim. or sec. amine and hydrogen at 1-400 bars and 80-250 degrees C in presence of a catalyst (A) contg. the following oxygen-contg. metal cpds. in amts. (by wt.) 20-85% Zr cpd. (calculated as ZrO2), 1-30% Cu cpd. (calculated as CuO), 30-70% Ni cpd. (calculated as NiO), 0.1-5% cpd. of molybdenum (calculated as MoO3) and 0-10% cpds. of aluminium and/or manganese (calculated as Al2O3 or MnO2). Pref. (I) is NR<1>R<2>-Y-NR<3>R<4>, (II) is HO-Y-NR<3>R<4> and (III) is NHR<1>R<2>. R<3>, R<4> = 1-20C alkyl, 3-12C cycloalkyl, aryl, 7-20C aralkyl or 7-20C alkaryl; or R<3>+R<4> = (CH2)m-X-(CH2)n; R<1>, R<2> = H or as R<3>, R<4>; X = O, CH2 or NR<5>; R<5> = 1-20C alkyl, 3-12C cycloalkyl, aryl, 7-20C aralkyl or 7-20C alkaryl; Y = 2-12C alkylene chain, opt. substd. by 1-5 1-4C alkyl.
