The lock for the bonnet catch of a motor vehicle has a cable or linkage (11) to release the catch, and a sliding block (23) attached to the linkage. The sliding block can move laterally in a housing (21). A spring inside the housing holds the sliding block toward the locked position. An electromagnet (17) with a its plunger (27) moving transversely to the sliding block, is fixed in a housing (19) attached to the body work of the vehicle. The plunger of the electromagnet is displaced by a spring (37) so it engages in a hole in the sliding block, preventing release of the bonnet catch. If the electromagnet is energised the plunger is retracted, and the bonnet catch can be released by manual operation of the cable or linkage (11).
