Soil reinforcement/stabilisation, esp. for preparing road or rail track beds, consists of mixing the soil with slag from oxygen conversion of steel and blast furnace. The steel conversion slag is ground to produce granules of under 160 mu m and pref. under 80 mu m to act as a clay flocculant. The blast furnace slag is also ground, to produce 'Blaine' (RTM) surfaces of between 2000 and 5000 cm<2>/g, so that it acts as a hydraulic binding agent. The soil is mixed first with the steel conversion slag and then with the blast furnace slag. To treat 1 sq m of soil to a depth of 25 cm some 5 wt.%, or about 20 kg, of each type of slag is required.
