Sepn. includes using a membrane separator for a source gas contg. at least two components passing along a principal gas line (1) through the following stages: (a) compressing the source gas in a gas compressor (2); (b) treating the compressed source gas in a gas conditioning unit (3); (c) separating the conditioned source gas in a membrane separator (4) to obtain a residual gas with a higher concn. of one of the gaseous components than in the source gas; and (d) feeding the residual gas to at least one user station (14) at the end of the principal line via a balancing tank (5). The compressor alternately operates or is stopped. When the compressor is stopped, the pressure is maintained in at least one of the following sections of the principal gas line: (i) a section including the conditioner, between point A between the compressor and the conditioner and point B between the conditioner and the separator, or (ii) a section including the conditioner and the separator between point A as before and point C between the separator and the balancing tank or the user station. Installation to carry out the above process with a principal gas line containing successively a gas compressor, a conditioner, a membrane separator and means of isolating a section of the line at points A and B, upstream of a user station.
