PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the peeling off layers of an effective optical modulation region by forming electrodes in both of the parts corresponding to the effective optical modulation region and the parts corresponding to peripheral regions via a layer consisting of a prescribed material and separating the electrodes in both regions from each other. SOLUTION: The striped electrodes 15, 15' for driving liquid crystals are composed of transparent conductive materials, such as ITO, arranged on the color filter groups 13 within the effective optical modulation region (corresponding to a display region) (a). Electrode patterns 19 are arranged near the end faces of a glass substrate 11 on dummy patterns 13' of the color filters within the peripheral regions (b), are separated from the electrodes 15 for driving liquid crystals and are not driven. The liquid crystal element is provided with the electrodes 15, 15', 19 on the substrate across both of the effective optical modulation region (a) and the peripheral regions (b) and the cell gap is made uniform over the entire region where the liquid crystals 12 are held. The orientation state of the liquid crystals is thus uniformly controlled over the entire surface through the regions (a), (b). |
