A sequence (I), or sequence able to hybridise with (I), expressing hydroxy-phenyl pyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD) that is not derived from a human or a marine bacterium is new. Also claimed are: (1) a chimeric gene (II) for transforming plants contg. in correct transcriptional order: (a) a native plant promoter; (b) a heterologous coding sequence; and (c) a polyadenylation signal; (2) a vector contg. (II); (3) a plant cell contg. (II); and (4) a plant, pref. a dicot, regenerated from the cells of (3).
