A thermal energy storage facility (1, 61, 53) is provided that consists of a packed bed (5, 65) with an essentially unconstrained outer region (7, 67) and a duct having a heat exchange end region (13, 73) located within a central lower region of the packed bed (5, 65) and a fluid supply end (11, 71) opposite the heat exchange end region (13, 73). The heat exchange end region (13, 73) of the duct permits heat transfer fluid at an elevated temperature to pass from the duct to the packed bed (15, 75) during a charge cycle to heat the packed bed from an inner region outwards. The heat transfer fluid is drawn from the packed bed (5, 65) into the duct (3, 63) during a discharge cycle. |
