<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a battery of sodium-sulfur cells having a high energy density and enhanced reliability and safety by installing a heat pipe between the cells gathered in a heat insulated vessel. SOLUTION: Sodium-sulfur element cells 1 are collectively installed in a heat insulated vessel 3a, and around it a filler material 2 or spacer is provided, and a heat pipe 4 penetrating a lid 3b and connected with a heat removing device 5 such as a heat-exchanger is installed between these element cells 1. Use of sodium as the working fluid for the pipe permits quick start of heat removal despite eventual breakage of any cell 1 which should cause temperature running over 500 deg.C, while use of the sulfur as the working fluid allows performance of active heat removal or equalization at a temp. over the operating temp. of the cells 1. Thus a battery of sodium-sulfur cells is accomplished, which has a high energy density and enhanced reliability and safety.</p> |
