PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a latent image having higher resolution on the surface of an image carrying body using an existing rod lens. SOLUTION: An LED array 1 comprising a plurality of LEDs arranged linearly in the axial direction of a rotatable image carrying body emits a luminous flux which passes through an imaging optical element 2 and exposes the surface of image carrying body 4 thus forming an image. In such an image forming system, respective elements are set such that a following condition is satisfied between these element and the transfer function MTF (N) of the imaging optical element for the resolution N(dpi) of LED; (y/x)×MTF (N)>0.2 (where, x=25.4×10<-3> /N and x>y), assuming the resolution of LED is N(dpi), the size of one pixel is x(μm), and the size of light emitting part is y(μm).
