PACKET PROCESSING UNIT AND METHOD FOR ERROR CORRECTION CODING FOR MPEG SIGNAL

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain proper error correction at packet processing by setting the capability of error correction for a packet depending on the importance of a bit stream received by the packet processing circuit. SOLUTION: A video signal is received by a video input terminal 10 and an encoder 14 applies the compression coding to the video signal into an MPEG signal. The packet processing circuit 16 applies packet processing to the output signal by a variable length in the unit of pictures to obtain a PES. A packet processing circuit 18 extracts the PES by each 184-byte and provides an output of a transport stream(TS) by using it as one packet. A setting circuit 20 identifies a kind of the picture of a bit stream of the received PES. A setting circuit 22 decides the type of error correction of the circuit 18 by the input from the circuit 20. The circuit 18 provides an output of the data subject to error correction via a multiplexer circuit 30.
