<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electron source in which all elements are activated sufficiently. SOLUTION: In an electron source in which surface conduction type emission elements are placed on a matrix, a row of the elements connected to common wiring in predetermined order is selected (S501), and an activating pulse is applied to that row to measure current (S503). Thereafter, whether or not the current measured is greater than the previously measured one by not less than a predetermined value dIf is determined (S504), and if it is smaller, activation of the row is judged to have finished, and the next row is activated (S506); if it is greater, the current value measured is stored (S507), and an activating pulse is imparted (S508) after a certain time. Thus activation is carried out as the current is monitored, to determine whether or nor the activation has been sufficient and to enable sufficient activation according to the determination result.</p> |
