PRODUCTION OF CIS-4-TERTIARY-BUTYLCYCLOHEXANOL

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound useful as a perfumery in high purity at a low cost by stereoselectively hydrogenating 4-t-butylcyclohexanone with an inexpensive ruthenium-containing catalyst in the presence of a base and an amine. SOLUTION: cis-4-t-Butylcyclohexanol is produced by hydrogenating (A) 4-t-butylcyclohexanone of the formula using (B) a ruthenium-phosphine complex as a catalyst in the presence of (C) a base having alkali metal or alkaline earth metal and (D) an amine. The component B is e.g. the compound of the formula RuH2 (PPh3 )4 (Ph is phenyl), RuHCl(PPh3 )4 , etc. The component C is especially preferably KOH or NaOH and the component D is e.g. ethylenediamine or trimethylenediamine.
