PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an optically active compound which is represented by a specific formula and is useful as a liquid crystal element or the like because of its effect of giving large spontaneous polarization, high response and reduced temperature dependence of response speed and high contrast. SOLUTION: This compound is represented by the formula [R1 -R3 are each H, F, CN; A3 is (substituted) 1,4-phenylene, pyridin-2,5-diyl; A1 and A2 are each a single bond, A3 ; X1 is a single bond, COO, OCO; X2 is a single bond, OCH2 ; *means optical activity], typically optically active 3-ethylidene-5- 4-(5- decylpyrimidin-2-yl)phenoxymethyl}tetrahydrofuran-2-one. This compound is preferably prepared through the reaction of 4-(5-decylpyrimidin-2-yl)phenol with an optically active epichlorohydrin. |
