PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a styrene polymer excellent in flow ability in processing reduced in odor and excellent also in heat stability by polymerizing, a monomer mixture based on a styrene monomer in the presence of a mercapto carboxylic ester having a specified structure. SOLUTION: 0.1 to 5 pts.wt. mercapto carboxylic ester represented by the formula (wherein R is a residue of a 1-18C alcohol having 1-4 hydroxyl groups; R<1> is H or methyl; and n is 1-4) is added to 100 pts.wt. monomer mixture comprising 50-95wt.% at least one styrene monomer selected among styrene,α- methylstyrene and halogen-substituted styrenes, 5-30wt.% acrylonitrile or methacrylonitrile, and 0-30wt.% other vinyl monomers copolymerizable therewith, and the obtained mixture is polymerized in the presence of a radical polymerization initiator to obtain a styrene polymer. |
