A container (1) for sterilising medical instruments, eg. by dry heat, steam, or chemically with or without a vacuum, has its lid (2) connected to a mechanism which opens and closes automatically at the start and end of sterilisation, so that the sterilised instruments are sealed until needed. The lid opening and closing mechanism can be in the form of one or more metal bellows (3) of the type used in pressure measuring equipment, designed to close and open the lid in response to pressure differences. In a variant the mechanism can be based on the expansion or deformation of a metal component, or on an envelope filled with a gas. The mechanism is connected to the container lid by levers, flexible elements or cams.
