A hearing aid, having alterable parameters includes analog-to-digital input circuitry for forming a digital signal representative of an incident acoustic wave. A digital signal processor, coupled to said input circuitry, forms and processes first and second, frequency distinguishable data streams representative, at least in part, of the digital signal, at a first rate, A control unit coupled to said processor includes circuitry for logarithmically processing at least one of the digital data streams, at a reduced rate, less than the first rate. A parameter value storage memory is coupled to the unit, and an interface is provided for accessing the memory and altering parametric values stored therein.
