An inspection and maintenance chamber (1) to accommodate an apparatus underground, e.g. a gas or water supply valve, consists of a protecting chamber (2), an opening in the base (14) for the apparatus, flanges (8,9) on the sides of the chamber and a cover (3) and supporting system (10). The cover has an inner lip (12) around the edge with cutaways to accept the flanges on the chamber. The cover shape corresponds to paving slabs or paviours.
