The invention relates to a process for manufacturing lignocellulose-based composite products. According to the process a finely dispersed material containing lignocellulose is mixed with a modifying chemical and a binder to produce a formable mixture, the mixture then being brought into the desired shape. According to the invention an acid anhydride, solid at room temperature, or a solid starting material for such an anhydride, such as maleic acid or succinic acid anhydride, is used as modifying chemical. After modification treatment, the product is allowed to harden. The invention makes it possible to reduce the swelling of the thickness of the boards and increases their transverse tensile strength.
