摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform a stable and sure writing in all scanning lines even in the panel of a large display capacity by generating priming discharges between data electrodes and scanning electrodes and sustating electrodes and performing writing discharges while utilizing strong wall electric charges due to the discharges. SOLUTION: Priming discharges are made to generate by simultaneously impressing a scanning side priming pulse 2 and a sustaing side priming pulse 3 on scanning side electrodes 16 and sustaing side electrodes 17 at the beginning of an address period 1 and equivalent wall electric charges are generated on the transparent dielectric layers 22 being on the scanning electrodes 16 and the sustaing electrodes 17. Thereafter, respective scanning lines are successively scanned. Successive scannings are performed by scanning the completion timings of scanning side priming pulses 2 impressed on scanning electrodes 16. In the cells in which a display is performed, data pulses 4 are impressed on corresponding data electrodes 18 by synchronizing with the completion timings of scanning side priming pulses 2. Erasing discharge erasing wall electric charge on scanning electrodes 16 are made to generate by these data pulses.
