<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection type picture display device which is bright, whose resolution is high and whose color reproducing range is wide. SOLUTION: This device is provided with a light source 1, a parabolic-surface mirror 2 and a polarizing beam splitter(PBS) 3. Then, S polarized light reflected on the PBS 3 is made incident on a cross dichroic prism 4 being <=40 nm when the difference of cut-off wavelength between P polarized light and the S polarized light is 50% of transmissivity. By the prism 4, the light is separated by reflecting the wavelength areas R and B of the light from the PBS 3 and transmitting the wavelength area G thereof and made incident on reflection type liquid crystal display elements 5-R, 5-G and 5-B corresponding to respective colors. Besides, the reflected light thereof is synthesized again by the prism 4. Then, only the light becoming the P polarized light because polarized light is rotated by the elements 5 is transmitted through the PBS 3, passed through a projection lens 7 and projected on a screen 8. The S polarized light is returned to the light source 1 side.</p> |
