摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a semitransmission type and bright reflection type liquid crystal element and to realize multicolor display by arranging 1st and 2nd specified polarizing splitting means on both sides of a transmissive polarization axis varying means and using a colored light source. SOLUTION: TN liquid crystal panels 22 to 26 are used as a transmissive polarization axis varying optical element, and a blue color polarizing plate 12 is provided above the panels 22 to 26, and then a light scattering body 30, a polarizing splitter 40 and a red EL backlight 60 are provided below the panels 22 to 26 in this order. As for the reflection type display at the time when external light is made incident; blue display is performed at a voltage non-impressing part (polarized light 13 and 14) and white display is performed at a voltage impressing part (polarized light 15 and 16). As for the transmission type display by the light from the backlight 60; black display is performed because red colored light from the backlight 60 is absorbed by the plate 12 at the voltage impressing part (polarized light 18), and red display is performed because it is transmitted through the plate 12 at the voltage non-impressing part (polarized light 17).
