<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the waveguide type optical element which makes use of double refraction and the manufacture of the waveguide type optical element. SOLUTION: A TE-passing polarizer 10 has a waveguide structure formed by laminating a substrate 100, a lower cladding 110, a core 120 where a waveguide 140 is formed, and an upper cladding 130 in order. Further, the core 120 formed of an electrooptic polymer has a polarizing optical waveguide 150 formed as part of the optical waveguide 140 to specific length 170 in the travel direction of the optical waveguide 150 and also has a light bleaching area 160 formed so that the polarizing optical waveguide 150 is sandwiched from both the sides. The light bleaching area 160 has such characteristics that the refractive index to TE mode light decreases, but that to TM mode light has a little variation or slightly increases through bleaching by ultraviolet-ray irradiation. Therefore, the TE-passing polarizer 10 has different specific refractive indexes to the light bleaching area 160 between the TE mode and TM mode, so only a TE wave between incident lights TE and TM passes through the light guide 150.</p> |
